Editing Tools
The toolbar above the timeline holds six tools. Each one has a single-key shortcut, so most edits are a keypress and a drag.
The tools
| Tool | Key | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Selection | V | Select, move, and arrange clips. |
| Trim edit | T | Drag a clip edge to change where it starts or ends. |
| Razor | C | Cut a clip wherever you click. |
| Rate stretch | R | Change a clip's duration by changing its playback speed. |
| Slip | Y | Change which source frames play inside a clip, without moving it. |
| Slide | U | Move a clip while the neighboring cuts adjust around it. |
Trim behaviors
- A ripple trim changes an edit and shifts everything after it, so the total duration changes.
- A rolling trim moves the cut between two neighboring clips. The overall duration stays the same.
- A slip edit changes the source frames inside a clip without moving the clip or its neighbors.
- A slide edit moves a clip along the track and adjusts the cuts on either side.
Ripple and rolling are behaviors of the Trim edit tool, not separate tools with their own shortcut.
Keep clips in sync
- Linked selection moves a video clip and its audio together. Toggle it with
Shift+L. - Link clips with
Ctrl+Alt+Land unlink them withAlt+Shift+L. - Sync lock on a track keeps timing aligned during ripple-style edits.
Structural edits
- Insert a freeze frame at the playhead with
Shift+Fto hold a single frame. - Group a run of clips into a compound clip to reuse it or to simplify a busy section. Open it as a sequence tab to edit its contents, see Timeline Editing.
- Use the Bento layout dialog to arrange selected visual clips into a structured grid.
