Editor Layout
The editor is five surfaces: a toolbar across the top, a media sidebar on the left, the preview monitor in the middle, the timeline along the bottom, and the properties panel on the right.
The main surfaces
- Toolbar (top): back to your projects, the project name, Settings, Keyboard Shortcuts, Export, and the Render queue.
- Media sidebar (left): your assets and the tools that create new items. Its tabs run across the top of the panel; the arrow in its corner collapses it to a strip of icons.
- Preview monitor: the current frame, with overlays, masks, scopes, and playback controls.
- Timeline (bottom): tracks, clips, markers, and the edit tools.
- Properties (right): edits whatever you have selected.
The media sidebar tabs
Each tab shows an icon with its name underneath. Click a tab to open it; the panel keeps the active tab highlighted.

The three workspaces
Three keyboard shortcuts switch the whole layout.
- Edit (Alt+1Option+1) is the default cutting layout: arranging, trimming, text, shapes, effects, transitions, and preview.
- Color (Alt+2Option+2) is for grading, with color wheels, curves, and scopes for the selected clip. See Effects and Color.
- Motion (Alt+3Option+3) is the layered composition workspace: layers, keyframes, graphs, presets, and procedural animation. See Motion and Animation Presets.
Select a visual clip in Edit and open Animation in Properties for the common presets, the applied-animation list, text motion, and Create Motion Clip.
Staying out of trouble
- The editor saves your work automatically while you edit. There is no save button to remember.
- Undo with Ctrl+ZCmd+Z and redo with Ctrl+Shift+ZCmd+Shift+Z.
